It always seems to be those tell-tale puffy red eyes and dark circles that give away the fact we haven’t been getting quite as much sleep as we should. The skin around our eyes is thinner more sensitive than the rest of our face, which is why this area suffers first from those late nights partying, and as we get older this is one of the first places we start to see fine lines and wrinkles. Bobbi Brown’s Hydrating Eye Cream claims to give the delicate skin around your eyes that much needed extra TLC, so we’ve put it under our Beauty Microscope!

The Claims

Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream claims to refresh the skin around the eye, preparing it for “seamless” makeup application. According to Bobbi Brown, both naturally occurring humectants and a “perfect” level of emollients leave the skin feeling smooth, plumped and rehydrated. Let’s take a closer look and explore the formula for ourselves.

Humectants & Emollients

The word ‘humectant” originates from the Latin word “humectare” which means “to moisten”. Butylene Glycol, Glycerin and Sodium Hyaluronate are all humectants present in this product. These ingredients help to attract water, hydrating the skin and making the skin appear more plump which may temporarily help to get rid of those pesky fine lines around the eyes.

Squalene, also included by Bobbi Brown, is an emollient that is normally found in sebum, which is naturally produced by the skin. Emollients help prevent the loss of water and help to hold oil in the stratum corneum (outermost layer of skin), this helps to rehydrate and smooth the skin’s appearance. The moisture doesn’t stop there for Bobbi Brown’s Hydrating Eye Cream as many fatty acids (oleic and linoleic just to name a few) can be found in both Avocado Oil and Jojoba Oil. These fatty acids aid the barrier function of the skin, to once again help retain that precious moisture. Avocado and jojoba oils are some of The Geeks’ favourite oils, so we’re always happy to see them in moisturising products!

Aloe barbadensis Leaf

More commonly known as Aloe Vera, Aloe barbadensis has been used for its anti-inflammatory effects for thousands of years and guess what… we still haven’t grown tired of it! Aloe vera affects an inflammatory pathway in the skin called the cyclooxygenase pathway, which one root of its soothing properties. On the eye area, Aloe vera will has welcome soothing effects which will help to combat that unwanted early morning puffiness!

Antioxidants

Tocopheryl Acetate (AKA Vitamin E) is an antioxidant which means that it has the ability to absorb free radicals, therefore it helps to protect our cells from damage which could lead to premature ageing.

Lastly, but by no means least is Witch Hazel. Witch Hazel is renowned for its astringent properties, but it also contains tannins which are a natural type of antioxidant. Similar to Vit E, tannins are oxygen scavengers so help to prevent skin premature ageing, which is crucial around the sensitive eye area.

The Verdict

We weren’t disappointed here as Bobbi Brown appear to have whipped up a fab product. Moisturising humectants and emollients along with soothing aloe vera and anti-ageing antioxidants, it lives up to all of its claims. At £32 for 15ml it’s not cheap but we feel a little will go a long way with this product and it will work wonders on dry, puffy over-tired eyes. Bobbi Brown’s Hydrating Eye Cream get’s a smile from The Geeks!
