Drug Store Product Review

Boots essentials cucumber moisturising cream is the first on our drug store shopping list due to its attractive ingredients and even more attractive price! Can the science behind this £1.50 jar stand up to some of the more expensive moisturisers on the shelves?

Mineral oil is a long-standing ingredient and has been used for hundreds of years. It can make our skin super soft as it traps water in the skin. It does this by reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL), which is the sneaky evaporation from our skin into the atmosphere. This is a great method of moisturising as it tackles the problem head on, rather than trying to cover up the problem.

Next up is glycerin, which is another great moisturising ingredient so we’re pleased to see it included in this drug store moisturiser. Glycerin is ‘hygroscopic’ which means that it can absorb water from the air, bringing it to the skin to hydrate it. Not only that, Glycerin can also change the lipid arrangement of our skin. When we have dry skin, our skins lipids are in a more solid arrangement, but ideally, we want them to be more fluid and glycerin is able to do this for us!

Tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E to us) is an antioxidant so helps keep those free radicals at bay, which could otherwise cause cellular damage and lead to premature ageing! We were also pleased to see that vitamin E isn’t alone in this line up. Retinyl palmitate (a form of vitamin A) is included as a little added bonus, due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing effects!

Lastly, we move onto the star ingredient – cucumber extract! This was traditionally used in the Himalayas to treat headaches due to its analgesic and cooling effects. In the beauty world however, it is used for its antioxidant properties as it can fight free radical damage (not to mention it smells fab!). However, cucumber extract is pretty low down on the ingredient list, so it’s hard to know how much of this extract there actually is in the product. Considering the low price tag of this product too, we’re doubtful it’s very much.

Boots essentials cucumber moisturising cream is a great basic moisturiser, with an even greater price tag (only £1.50!). Although we’re doubtful about the cucumber, this moisturiser gets a massive thumbs up from the Geeks for it’s moisturising properties and certainly is an ‘essential’ in any make up bag.
