Caudalie are well known for their grape-licious ingredients as their product range is based around 3 little secrets found on the grapevines of Bordeaux, Champagne and Burgundy. And just like Champagne, Caudalie’s products tend to be luxurious, indulgent and a little pricey. Are Caudalie’s grapes the elixir of youth we have all been waiting for? Let’s look deeper behind the science.

The Claims
Twice daily application of Premier Cru the Elixir to the face and neck is meant to help ‘restore youthfulness to the skin’. Caudalie claim this is all down to the three signature patents of resveratrol, viniferine and polyphenols with the help of an additional five exceptional plant oils. The anti-ageing elixir is then topped off with a sensual fragrance of rose and oak.

Polyphenols
There are many different types of polyphenols found in the plant world, especially in grapes. Polyphenols are potent antioxidants and popular ingredients in antiageing formulations. Every day stresses, including exposure to the sun and pollution, results in a build-up of molecules called free radicals. Over time free radicals can damage the skin and its underlying structure which can manifest as wrinkles and other signs of premature ageing. Antioxidants work by mopping up these free radicals to help stop damage being caused but do not directly undo damage which is already there. For this we need something extra.

Resveratrol
A staple in Caudalie’s product range, resveratrol is a polyphenol as mentioned before. As well as slowing down the ageing of skin through its antioxidant properties, resveratrol helps your skin hold onto its youth by preventing your skins underlying scaffold of collagen and elastin. It does this by interfering with enzymes that would otherwise degrade these essential scaffold molecules to promote the skin’s underlying structure.

Grape Seed Oil
Grape (Vitis vinifera) seed oil is another ingredient on a large chunk of Caudalie’s products it is surprising that there is actually limited research publicly available. The oil is known to be rich in oleic and linoleic acids which nourish and moisturise the skin. It is assumed to be an antioxidant and have the ability to lighten dark spots by targeting tyrosine which is one of the building blocks for melanin, the colouring in your skin. By reducing the amount of melanin you can lighten dark spots making the skin look more even and youthful. Sadly, a lot of this research was conducted through Caudalie themselves so us Geeks would like a little more from external research groups before we are totally convinced.

5 Plant Oils
We have already talked about one of the plant oils, grape seed oil. The other oils are jojoba seed, coriander seed, prickly pear and sandalwood seed oil. Jojoba is another favourite of Caudalie appearing frequently in their products. Both Jojoba and prickly pear seed oil show anti-inflammatory effects, used to calm agitated skin and redness.Sandalwood oil works is a lightening agent and works in the same way that Caudalie claim grape seed oil lightens skin. Sandalwood oil blocks the production of tyrosine, which is key in producing melanin,  resulting in a lightening of the skin.

Very little research has been conducted on coriander seed oil, although it is speculated that it does have antimicrobial effects. If this is true, it may be effective against spots and keeping your skin calm.

Vitamin E
Caudalie claim that their polyphenols are 10 000 times better antioxidants than vitamin E which is a bit of a difficult one for them to prove but they have thrown some vitamin E into the mix aswell for good measure. Tocopherol and Tocopheryl Acetate both make an appearance in the Elixir and for additional antioxidant, free radical-kicking power.

Our Verdict
The claims set the bar very high saying that Caudalie can restore youthfulness. It is unlikely that any product currently available can truly restore youth, but with a high content of antioxidants and some good skin care ingredients this formula could help fend off signs of premature ageing (even if we might have expected a little more from non-antioxidant ingredients than what we found here). The Elixir is one of the cheaper options in Caudalie’s product range and have extremely similar ingredients so if you are willing to dig in your pocket, make sure to have a read around which Caudalie products have which ingredients so you don’t end up paying double for the same thing.
