The Repairwear Sculpting Night Cream is the latest addition to the ever-growing Repairwear range from skincare giants Clinique. It’s a cream-gel overnight moisturising treatment suitable for all skin types – let’s take a look at the ingredients to see if this promise-packed product is worthy of a glowing review!

The Claims

The Repairwear Sculpting Night Cream claims to help define the appearance of facial contours, smooth and firm the neck and chest area and create “luminosity”. It boasts 8 key ingredients, 3 of which make up its “Collagen Web Technology”.

Collagen Web Technology?! No, it’s not a computer update, it’s a component of this cream

That all sounds pretty fancy, but what actually is it? The Collagen Web Technology consists of Centella asiatica, whey protein and acetyl hexapeptide-8.

Centella asiatica is a plant that packs quite a punch! Used for centuries to treat skin conditions like eczema, CA boosts collagen production and decreases the activity of metalloproteinases, which are enzymes that break collagen down. It also increases production of a molecule called fibronectin, which interacts with collagen to help maintain skin structure. To top it off, CA also increases the growth and division of fibroblasts, which are the cells that produce both the all-important collagen and fibronectin. You might be asking why they bothered with any other ingredients!

Acetyl hexapeptide-8 is a common ingredient used in anti-ageing products, particularly those applied to the skin around the eyes. It is claimed to reduce the formation of wrinkles by blocking the action of a particular protein complex – this results in a botox-like relaxation of wrinkle-causing muscles (but importantly, less severe and without the needles!). But don’t be sold too soon! It’s difficult to determine just how much of this would actually get into the skin to where it needs to work, as peptides like this are relatively large and tend to be charged, which the skin isn’t a fan of letting through. We couldn’t find any real scientific studies of the effect of this molecule on wrinkle appearance – boo!

As far as whey protein goes, you’ll find some patents that talk about combinations of whey proteins and vitamins that have collagen-enhancing effects, but it was difficult to get the low-down on exactly how and what whey protein does by itself! It’s good to know it’s not just been plucked out of thin air though.

This Collagen Web Technology sounds pretty interesting, and Centella asiatica seems particularly good! We should point out it’s still not going to be a magical wrinkle-busting cure though (unfortunately nothing is!).

So what ingredients make up the rest of the line up?

Another big ingredient is White Birch extract, which has been used for centuries by Native Americans to treat wounds. It promotes formation of the skin barrier and reduces water loss from the skin to the air to combat dryness, and has anti-inflammatory properties to soothe the skin too.

The cream also contains murumuru butter, derived from the seeds of the Astrocaryum murumuru plant and used for its moisturising properties and Vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps protect the skin against damage from UV rays and other external stresses, and even promotes collagen production (maybe they missed that when looking for their Collagen Web Technology!).

The Verdict

So have Clinique sculpted a product we like?

The Clinique Repairwear Sculpting Night Cream seems to have the collagen-boosting side backed by science. We must point out that information available on the optimum amount of ingredients like Centella asiatica is still scarce. We would love to get some more information on this before giving it our full support, but we’re impressed with this and its moisture-boosting properties. We’re not sure about the acetyl hexapeptide-8, especially with a lack of real studies on its wrinkle-busting properties, and we’d have preferred an alternative with proven benefits! It’s a good start Clinique, but we need more data before we invest!
