We’re always investigating the latest and hottest anti-ageing lotions and potions here at BBTG HQ, and Elemis has not escaped our attention. At £80 for 50ml, we’re expecting some seriously impressive science to back up their claims before it can earn the Beauty Geek approval, and a place in our cosmetic bags.

The Claims

Elemis Pro-Definition Day Cream claims to use advanced ingredients and plant extracts to focus on the signs of ageing and to ‘firm, plump and tighten our skin’. But is it just another in a long line of anti-ageing creams? Let’s investigate…

The Science behind the Bottle

Sweet Iris Stem Cells

Stem cells are the must-have of the moment in the beauty world, with anecdotes that they can increase the synthesis of collagen and aid cell regeneration to leave behind the significant signs of ageing. With claims like these, it’s hardly surprising that everyone was quick to jump on the stem cell bandwagon. But much to our disappointment, there isn’t much solid scientific research to back up these claims for stem cells and Sweet Iris stem cells in particular. Fortunately its not all bad news, as Sweet Iris is rich in flavonoids, which are effective antioxidants. This helps to rid our skin of the damaging effects of free radicals, but as for aiding cell regeneration? We’re not so sure.

Lupinus Albus Seed Extract

Lupinus Albus seed extract, more commonly known as white lupin, has been claimed by Elemis to ‘firm and tighten’ our skin. We wouldn’t go as far to say that, but there is some evidence to suggest white lupin can inhibit the enzymes that are responsible for degrading collagen. Collagen is one of the main structural proteins in our skin; so preventing its breakdown could help to slow down the signs of ageing!

Arjuna Bark Extract

Extracted from the bark of the Arjuna Tree, this ingredient contains compounds known as pentacyclic triterpenoids that are able to increase hydration of skin by reducing transepidermal water loss, leaving us with smoother and plumper-looking skin. Ajuna bark extract has even been tested on mature skin, and it was found to induce a visible reduction of sagging skin around the cheek and jaw area, compared to those individuals who were not treated.

Vitamin E

Anti-ageing formulas aren’t complete without the addition of vitamin E. Queen of antioxidants; this ingredient helps protects our skin from damage-causing free radicals that can build up, especially with exposure to sunlight.

The Verdict

Sweet Iris stem cells aside, we like the other hydrating, antioxidant and collagen-boosting ingredients featuring in this line up. What we’re not so sure of is why Elemis Pro-Definition Day Cream is triple the price of any other anti-ageing cream out there. Antioxidants, emollients and collagen-boosting properties are basics for most anti-ageing products so Elemis need to find something more revolutionary in order to justify their £80 price tag. We think we’ll be saving our pennies rather than splurging on this one.
