Botanical extracts are becoming ever more popular in the cosmetic industry and beauty addicts are turning towards natural remedies to sort out their beauty blunders. We have seen all sorts of weird and wonderful extracts from all corners of the planet but today we want to delve deeper into the secrets behind Fresh Black Tea Firming Overnight Mask.

The Claims

“An intense moisturizing overnight mask that can sync with your skins natural night time recovery process to achieve a lifted, firmer look by morning.” It claims to have a corset like effect on the skin, giving the appearance of a visibly more defined, contoured complexion. Made up of a complex of black tea ferment, black tea, blackberry leaf, lychee seed and belle de nuit extract, it is supposed to help smooth and rebalance the skin. Alongside these natural remedies, the formula contains peptides that claim to firm the skin and visibly defy the signs of gravity. Let’s take a closer look and see if the science can back up these bold claims…

The Science Behind The Bottle – Botanical Extracts

Black tea isn’t just the little boost we need to get out of bed on a morning (who knew!), it’s actually an ancient remedy that has been used in China for thousands of years for medicine, ritual and art form. Black tea contains a whole bunch of dimeric flavanols and polymeric polyphenols known as theaflavins and thearubigins, which may be able to reduce UVB induced damage in human skin. That’s not the only reason we were pleased to see black tea extract in this formula, as it also has antioxidant properties due to the polyphenols, which means it can scavenge reactive oxidation species that cause DNA damage of skin cells and could lead to signs of premature skin ageing if left unchecked. All hail black tea!

Belle de nuit, AKA Mirabilis Jalapa belongs to the Nyctaginacea family (if you want to be fancy!). This is another ancient herb that is used in many indigenous practises in different parts of the world for example in Brazilian herbal medicine they use Belle de nuit for skin problems such as eczema. This extract functions as an anti-inflammatory agent so will be able to calm and soothe skin.

Moisturising Ingredients

We are no strangers to hyaluronic acid at BBTG. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a key molecule found in the extracellular matrix (ECM) and is responsible for youthful-looking skin due to its ability to retain 1000 times it own weight in water! The more water our skin has, the more it looks and feels healthier (not to mention plumper!) Backing hyaluronic acid up, are several other moisturising ingredients including glycerin, jojoba oil, beeswax, shea butter and capric triglycerides (to name a few), which are also able to hydrate the skin, smoothing out those fine lines.

The Verdict

We LOVE the fact black tea overnight mask has been designed to improve skin all whilst we are tucked away in bed – the less effort the better! It is packed full of super hydrating ingredients which can deliver our skin an intense moisture hit to help it through these cold winter months. However we were disappointed by the lack of ingredients that were supposed to be able to leave us with a ‘lifted, firmer look’ and ‘give a more defined, contoured complexion’ and it seems these claims have been massively oversold, especially for the £63 price tag!
