How do the A-list have such good skin? Smooth, spot free and impossibly young looking! Life is not fair for we mere mortals. Celebrity skin care regimes are often a mystery, so when a when a certain product is designed as a skin saviour for the world’s greatest models, presenters and actors, its top of our list to investigate. GlamGlow Youth Mud Tinglexfoliate Treatment claims to be just that. But does the science hold up?

The Claims
GlamGlow Youth Mud Tinglexfoliate Treatment is a product created with the rich and famous in mind, that promises to give us their enviable glow. It is essentially a facemask, that when applied to the skin give a mild tingling sensation as it dries. It claims to brighten, tone and tighten, whilst also exfoliating, hydrating and stimulating collagen production. Looking at the reviews, it seems that both Beyoncé and Natalie Portman are fans. We like the sound of that, but exactly how does it work such wonders? Pass the microscope, this could get interesting!

The Science behind the Bottle

Clay
So first up on the ingredient list is clay; Montmorillonite (Volcanic minerals), Kaolin (French Sea Clay) and Magnesiym Aluminum Silicate (Purified Clay) to be specific. Clays are the common base for face masks as they are super absorbent and mop up the facial oils and dirt on the skin surface. Montmorillonite is a little more sophisticated though as it has antibacterial properties too. This means it helps tackle two root causes of spot formation – excess oil and bacterial infection. Montmorillonite is in the ‘bentonite’ class of clays, which are known as healing clays from their traditional uses.

Green Tea Extract

The Green tea extract in GlamGlow Youth Mud Tinglexfoliate Treatment is a bit of a miracle worker. Not only is it chock full of antioxidants which gives it a substantial anti-ageing boost, it is also anti-inflammatory. Clinical trials even show that it is effective increasing the elastic properties within the skin, predominantly our favourite connective tissue component collagen. So it looks like this product is living up to its youthful title!

Chamomile and cucumber extracts in this mask also help with inflammation and redness due to their calming, anti-inflammatory properties. Chamomile owes these properties to the molecule bisabolol, which works by blocking the production of small inflammation-promoting molecules called cytokines.

Another herbal extract in this youthful mud mask is Comfry. Known for its wound healing properties, it owes it anti-inflammatory and analgesic powers to a range of compounds found in the extract. Rosemarinic acid blocks the production of inflammatory mediators and allantoin stimulates cell growth and division for repair of damaged tissues. Choline reduces the blood vessel permeability (leakiness) associated with inflammation and puffyness, whilst also promoting the clearance of the chemical signals that induce inflammation. A great blemish busting combination there!

Pumice

The skin resurfacing, brightening powers of this product are down to exfoliation provided by pumice. This fine volcanic rock gently scrubs away dead skin cells on the surface that give the skin a dull appearance and can clog pores. The exfoliation process also encourages cell renewal to promote a brighter, more youthful appearance. Reviews claim that this product has an almost instant effect, reducing blackheads, pore size and brightening skin. The science behind the ingredients would suggest that’s a possibility.

The Verdict
GlamGlow Youth Mud Tinglexfoliate Treatment was created with the rich and famous in mind, and does come with a celebrity price tag. At £50 per 50g it’s a pretty pricey mud mask, but it seems like a little goes along way thanks to its potent ingredients. The science behind Youth Mud is pretty savvy, and the glowing reviews have got us convinced! We’ll be following Beyoncé’s lead and investing in a pot!
