High Street: GOSH Velvet Touch Foundation Primer

High End: Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer

Primers are a make up bag staple, as they smooth out the skin and essentially create a good canvas on which to apply make up to. But do we know what is in them?

Although there isn’t too much variation in primer formulation, differences in ingredients can make them look and feel slightly different. But is it worth splashing out on an expensive primer or can a high street one do the job just fine?

Smashbox

Smashbox photo finish contains cyclopentasiloxane and dimethicone, which are silicones. They help to smooth out any uneven areas of the skin that would normally collect make up, thereby giving our skin a better finish. Silicones also make your skin more hydrophobic (water-hating) as almost all make up is water insoluble, so its helps the make up stay on the skin for longer! Smashbox have also included Sunflower Seed Extract in the line up which helps the skins barrier function, so will reduce any sneaky water loss from our skin and keep it really hydrated, making our make up look even better. Propylene Glycol has also been added into the mix, this is a humectant that acts to increase the water content of the skin, again moisturising our skin and helping our make up to look great.

As an added bonus, Vitamin E is included which has antioxidant properties, so can fight free radical damage and ward off accelerated skin ageing!

GOSH

Gosh has a much simpler ingredient list (and a cheaper price tag!) but is also a silicone based primer, containing dimethicone and cyclopentasiloxane

and several other silicone ingredients. So it seems it will do its job as a primer and help to keep your make up looking better for longer but won’t have any of the added skin benefits of the Smashbox primer.

Our Verdict:

With the both primers containing the same silicones, it seems they will both work the same way to smooth out your skin and help your make up to look its best. However, if you are looking for a primer that has added benefits for your skin like moisturising and antioxidant properties, then Smashbox is the one for you. If you are not looking to splurge and would like a primer that ‘does what it says on the tin’, then GOSH would be the one for you!
