Any true beauty fanatic (the Geeks included) will be the first to tell you that SPF should be a makeup bag staple and remind you to protect your skin from the sun! Eternal youth isn’t found at the bottom of a fountain, but in a bottle of sunscreen. Kiehl’s have understood the importance of protecting skin and have developed the Ultra Light Daily Moisturiser SPF50. What do we geeks think about it? Let’s take a look.

The Claims

As the name suggests Kiehl’s have created the Ultra Light Daily Moisturiser to be almost weightless, so it can be worn as a base under makeup. It claims to provide UVA and UVB broad spectrum SPF 50 sun protection by including Mexoryl SX and Mexoryl XL and it also promises to help protect against the appearance of dark spots and wrinkles.

The Science behind the Bottle – All about SPF

So, we know protecting against the sun is essential to save us from ageing skin, but what is it in this product that actually protects us? Kiehl’s have added 4 different sunscreens to their daily moisturiser. Mexoryl XL and Mexoryl SX (sometimes referred to as Ecamsule) are very effective UVA absorbers to prevent the radiation reaching your skin and causing damage. Although these are the only two mentioned in the claims, Kiehl’s have also added Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, a UVB absorber which works in a similar way. It absorbs and scatters the UVB, keeping it away from your skin. So that’s a check for UVA and UVA protection.

Another gem which evaded the claims but we thought deserved a mention is UVA and UVB broad spectrum sunscreen titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide works as a physical barrier to stop the sun’s rays getting through to your skin. Four different guardians against UV, ideal for keeping back the years. It seems Kiehl’s really are all about looking after your skin.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol)

It’s no secret that basking in the sun for too long can accelerate the ageing process of our skin and can result in sun spots and those pesky fine lines and wrinkles. When we are unprotected from the sun, UV damage creates free radicals in your skin which can cause damage in these cells. The damage can be seen visibly in the form of premature aging skin. Vitamin E is an antioxidant which means that it can ‘mop up’ these free radicals preventing damage so that skin can hold onto its youth for a little longer.

Last but not least – Moisturising Ingredients

The Ultra Light Daily Moisturiser wouldn’t be quite as functional if it wasn’t for the vast addition of hydrating ingredients. Glycerin, propylene glycol and glyceryl stearate, amongst others, are the key ingredients in the daily moisturiser for looking after the skins barrier function and preventing water loss. Hydration is important for keeping the skin looking and feeling healthy and is the underlying secret to a great complexion.

The Verdict

We love that Kiehl’s have included four different compounds to provide us with protection us from the suns rays, all whilst keeping our skin hydrated to provide the perfect canvas for make up. At £31 for 60ml, it is at the pricier end for sunscreen but if you are looking to invest then this product provides full protection with no frills and has an army of loyal fans and a 4.8 star rating on Kiehl’s website. It’s a thumbs up from the Geeks.
