With dozens of beauty awards from the likes of Elle and InStyle magazine the beauty brains behind the Cleanse & Polish™ Hot Cloth Cleanser must be doing something right. Liz Earle, the super brand behind this facial cleanser have earned their place in the cosmetic world with environmentally friendly products and responsibly sourced ingredients. With this impressive list of accolades and some fantastic reviews and ratings to boot we couldn’t resist looking into the science behind this potential must. The concentrated yet gentle cleansing power of this product makes it suitable for every age and skin type but is it really the miracle cleanser we hope it to be?

The Claims

This hot cloth, plant-based cleanser has a two-phase action which aims to leave you with nothing but skin perfection. Phase one is the cleansing phase with the well-formulated cream claiming to remove all traces of face and eye make-up. Even that stubborn mascara that you bought for its long lasting power but regret buying when it comes to irritating your eyes trying to remove it! The second phase is all about polishing off the cream using the pure muslin cloth. The cloth has been designed to gently dislodge dead skin cells and help reveal clean, soft and radiant skin.

The Science behind the Bottle

Cera alba (beeswax)

Beeswax is an absolutely fab addition to the formula list. Scientifically it is mainly made up of esters of fatty acids and various long chain alcohols, which have skin protecting properties and help to relieve chapped skin. A German study found beeswax to be superior to similar barrier creams, creating an effective waterproof barrier on the skin for even more protection.

Beeswax also provides a rich emollient quality to creams making it deeply moisturising and perfect for anyone suffering with dry skin.

Caprylic/capric triglyceride

Beeswax isn’t the only emollient on the formula list however, which is what we love to see from moisturising cleansers. Caprylic/capric triglyceride is made up of a number of fatty acids which your skin can use to restore its skin barrier function. This will help your skin retain moisture and improve hydration for soft, radiant skin!

Theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter

Next up on the list is cocoa seed butter which is made from the roasted seeds of the cocoa tree. This rich, creamy butter is yet another emollient (no surprises there) and has additional moisturising effects on the skin. Theobroma cacoa is a traditional African remedy for dry skin, suitable for the most delicate of skin types so is an exciting addition for extra soft skin.

Humulus lupulus (hops) extract

This herbal extract comes from the pinecone-like fruit of the hop plant. The components of this natural ingredient have a lot of skin loving qualities so we’re not surprised to see it on the formula list! Studies have shown that xanthohumol and lupulones present in this extract have anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties so could give this product spot-preventing power.

Humulus lupulus extract is also an anti-oxidant with astringent properties to leave your skin cleansed and fighting ready. Anti-oxidants are fab because they help to scavenge free radicals, which cause damage of skin cells and could lead to signs of premature ageing if left unchecked.

Other Hydrating Ingredients

If all the moisturising ingredients we have mentioned above aren’t enough to convince you, Liz Earle have also included glycerin (one of our favourite moisturising ingredients) that when applied to the skin, can attract water from lower layers up to the outer layers of the skin to give a healthy, hydrated appearance. Giving glycerin a little back up is panthenol (also known as Vitamin B5), which works in a similar way to help the skin to hold onto the moisture it already has. This dream team will leave you skin looking and feeling healthier and fuller!

The Verdict

After this long list of science savvy ingredients we can see how the Liz Earle, Cleanse & Polish™ Hot Cloth Cleanser has earned its many awards and 5 star ratings. This astringent, anti-oxidant, anti-microbial cream covers all bases to leave your skin clean and protected. The emollients on this list certainly pack a hydrating punch so while cleansing your face you don’t have to worry about it drying out your skin! The retained moisture will also add to the already impressive amount skin barrier protection this product provides so that both you and your skin are ready to face the day. We’re thoroughly impressed with this cleansing, protecting, moisturising and full on skin-loving formula and the Geeks always stock up on this absolute beauty must have.
