There is no denying it: we are part of the #selfie generation. Whether you’re an Instagram queen or simply a Snapchat fan, sometimes the camera can be less than flattering – even with the help of a filter! Could NIOD Photography Fluid perfect our skin before the camera gets close?

The Claims

This serum aims to transform the skin using ‘topical photo-finishing technologies’, making it look better both in person and through a lens. With the promises of intense hydration, boosted radiance and a blurring effect, can this product give us a healthy glow without any re-touching? Let’s see!

Patented Dragon Fruit Chromatic Refractor

According to NIOD, this complex boosts the skin’s radiance with immediate effect, even under different light intensities and camera settings. Despite a lot of Beauty Geek digging, we couldn’t find the patent that has been granted for this ingredient, so we can’t say for sure what makes it so special. The dragon fruit extract in this ingredient has, however, been shown to have great anti-oxidant properties (along with extracts from P. vulgare rhizome, C. islandica thallus and S. magellanicum) and so should offer a welcome dose of protection from environmental damage.

Mineral Powders

If you’re looking for skincare to give your skin an airbrushed look, it should contain ingredients that are capable of scattering the light as it hits your skin. The titanium dioxide, tin oxide and mica in this product are all extremely fine powders that are capable of doing just this. We Geeks think that these ingredients are the ‘chromatic refractors’ that NIOD mentions on the product website, but without seeing the details of their patent we can’t decode this jargon for definite!  Titanium dioxide and tin oxide are also often used as opacifying agents, which means they should give a subtle amount of coverage to the skin while blurring any imperfections.

Hydrating Ingredients

One of the simplest ways to make your skin look and feel better is to increase its hydration. Luckily this product contains some of our favourite moisturising ingredients! Sodium hyaluronate, sodium PCA, urea and glycerin are all humectants, which means they are extremely effective at clinging onto water molecules. They work by absorbing water from the environment and deeper layers of the skin to boost moisture levels at the surface, leaving skin plumper, more radiant and photo-ready!

The Verdict
Aside from the reliable moisturising and light-reflecting ingredients, we didn’t find much in the way of exciting science in this product. We wish NIOD would release more details of their patented dragon fruit chromatic refractor, as for now it just seems like a jargon-heavy term for some fruit extracts and reflective pigments! Nonetheless, this product has won itself gold-stars galore in reviews and has been recommended by Harper’s Bazaar as a ‘skin-perfecting product’. We’ll leave it to you to decide whether #nofilter is worth the £20 price tag!
