In our beauty-driven world, anti-ageing skincare products seem to be appearing in abundance. With beautiful actresses at the forefront of product advertisements claiming each one to be better than the last it’s hard to know where to start. Okay, so these women may look amazing but can that really be achieved with a splash of serum here and there? We’ve put the Ole Henriksen truth serum collagen booster to the test to see if it can really achieve the magic results it claims. The brand is inspired by the Scandinavian philosophy of vitality and well-being at any age, which we’re hoping will be achievable with this skin care range. Ole Henriksen himself designs each spa inspired product to give you that signature ‘Ole Glow’. Ultimate skin care is a big job to take on and we want to know if this Danish skin cosmetician is the right one for it!

The Claims

This high powered vitamin C complex is said to help smooth out fine lines and wrinkles while preventing further damage from occurring. This serum claims to be packed full of powerful antioxidants to help fight off environmental damage and moisture-boosting ingredients to keep your skin perfectly nourished. It’s been designed to absorb instantly into the skin and penetrate the deeper layers of the skin where it can work its magic for long lasting results.

The Science behind the Bottle

This all sounds so promising and with so many exciting ingredients on the list we hope that the science can back up these big claims.

Orange Fruit Extract, Grapefruit Seed Extract and Rosehips Fruit Extract

First up under our beauty microscope are fruit extracts which have been used in this product for their purifying, astringent properties to achieve cleansed and refreshed skin. On top of this, orange fruit extract (Citrus Aurantium Dulcis) and grapefruit seed extract (Citrus Grandis) have high fatty acid contents which help keep your skin hydrated and are packed full of antioxidant power to tackle the pesky free radicals us Geeks are always going on about. This damage could otherwise manifest as premature ageing so antioxidants are a must have in any anti-ageing product! Orange and grapefruit seed aren’t the only fruit extracts in this formula with rosehips (Rosa Canina) fruit extract adding to the rescue party. This extract is extra exciting as it contains ascorbic acid, a form of vitamin C, which as well as adding to the antioxidant power also has anti-inflammatory properties and is thought to boost collagen production in the skin! Although this sounds exciting, we cannot be sure of the concentration of Vitamin C found in the fruit extract, and of the concentration of the extract found in the formula, so the Geeks aren’t convinced of it’s collagen boosting properties just yet!

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a stable and water-soluble form of vitamin C and is widely used in the beauty world. Topical application has been found to increase the collagen concentration of the skin which is a very important structural protein and essential in maintaining the firm structure of the skin. Increasing the concentration of collagen in your skin has been shown to leave your skin plumper and firmer while keeping fine lines and wrinkles at bay. While this sounds promising, it has been found that you would need 10 times higher concentration of sodium ascorbyl phosphate than ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in a formula for it to have the same affect on collagen.

On top of this, studies have shown that sodium ascorbyl phosphate is a potent antioxidant so can ‘mop up’ any free radicals that could have formed as a result of UV exposure and environmental stress, that could otherwise damage our DNA and lead to premature skin ageing.

Sodium Hyaluronate

Now we’ve addressed the collagen boosting claims of this serum we think it’s about time we think about the moisture locking properties some of these ingredients have. Keeping your skin hydrated will of course help to rid pesky dry skin, but more importantly it can aid in developing the skins barrier function and keep the skin supple and firm. With this in mind, sodium hyaluronate is the perfect addition to this formula as it has the ability to attract and retain water in the dermis. The skin is kept perfectly moisturised and skin elasticity is increased for essential tissue hydration and protection while keeping the skin firmer and plumper than ever.

Also as we’ve seen with collagen the levels of natural sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) found in the skin begins to deplete with age making it harder for our skin to naturally retain moisture. This makes sodium hyaluronate an even better addition to the ingredient list and is perfect for helping our skin care regime mature as we do.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a humectant (and a favourite among the Geeks) meaning it can attract water from lower layers up to the outermost layer of the skin to hydrate it and leave skin looking plumper and healthier.

The Verdict

We can see why Ole Henriksen chosen to call this product a truth serum as true is exactly what the claims have been proven to be. This anti-ageing serum has the antioxidant power, collagen production and nourishing hydration that we love to see in this sort of product. Having said that if we could change it, we’d add ascorbic acid to the formula or subsitute sodium ascorbyl phosphate for it, just to be sure we were getting as much collagen-boosting as possible from this formula so it could really be called a ‘high powered vitamin C complex’!
