Sun spots, age spots, dark spots, whatever you want to call them, most of us would rather not have them. Skin ageing is a concern for most of us skincare obsessives, and we’ll try anything and everything to and slow down the process and prolong our youthful looks. Sadly, it’s not just those pesky fine lines and wrinkles that can give our age away, with dark spots, uneven skin tone and patches of pigmentation adding years on too.

The Claims

Instead of targeting individual signs of ageing, Oskia aim to combat hyperpigmentation, fade dark spots and repair sun damage all in one go. Oskia Renaissance Brightlight Serum claims to have the ability to ‘even out skin tone to ensure a visibly brighter and more illuminated complexion’. Let’s take a look and see if the science is as bold as the claims.

Tackling Hyperpigmentation

Oskia promised to fight pigmentation and dark spots and they really delivered! Packed with an impressive amount of anti-ageing ingredients including niacinamide, arbutin, glutathione and not one but two forms of vitamin C, age spots and uneven skin tone will be a thing of the past. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate is a stable and water-soluble form of vitamin C and ascorbyl palmitate has been shown to be more stable/potent than ‘classic’ vitamin C. Their topical application has been found to have a rejuvenating effect on the skin by aiding the production of collagen whilst simultaneously blocking the action of an enzyme called tyrosinase, which is responsible for melanin (our skin’s pigment) production. On top of that, vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant, making it a triple threat against skin ageing. Backing vitamin C in its battle against pigmentation is niacinamide, arbutin and glutathione, which are all able to intervene in the melanin synthesis pathway to reduce any patches of uneven skin tone or dark spots.

Boosting Hydration

To help us achieve that ‘brighter, more illuminated complexion’ they promised, Oskia have included a whole host of great moisturising ingredients. Sodium hyaluronate (aka hyaluronic acid) is a welcome addition to any formula, as it is able to hold onto large volumes of water in our skin, effectively plumping it up and reducing the appearance of any fine lines and wrinkles. Glycerin is another favourite of the Geeks, as a humectant it tightly binds any water molecules that it comes in contact with, either from the air or deeper layers of the skin to increase hydration at the outermost layers of the skin. Last but not least is linoleic acid, a fatty acid that has been shown to improve the skin’s condition, while also increasing the skin’s hydration.

Antioxidant Power

All great skincare products are packed full of antioxidants, and Oskia Renaissance Brightlight Serum is no different. With both grape seed extract and vitamin E having potent antioxidant properties, combined with the two forms of vitamin C in this formula, together they will help to scavenge any free radicals, that if left unchecked could lead to signs of premature skin ageing.

Our Verdict

It’s hard to find fault when it comes to the product claims, as there’s a wealth of science to back each and every one. At £85 for 30ml, it’s a bit of a skincare splurge but we know where our paycheck will be going this month…
