We all like to indulge in a face mask every now and again for a quick-fix of radiance. Aimed at younger women, Pixi have created their Glow Mud Mask as a treat for oily and spot-prone skin. Designed to absorb oil and impurities and fight breakouts, this might just be what we need to tackle a bad skin day!

The Claims

Everyone has days when their skin appears lacklustre and in need of a little pick-me-up. Pixi claims that applying this mud mask for 15 minutes before bed can purify our skin by drawing out impurities and banishing spots. As hinted in the name, the mask leaves your skin with a natural glow… but will the ingredients pass our test? Let’s take a look!

The Science behind the Bottle

Dead Sea Mud and Salt

The first ingredient on our list is exactly what it sounds like, mud and salt from the Dead Sea, which is famous for its therapeutic benefits. Mud baths go back thousands of years and with good reason; research has shown that a single 20 minute application of mud from the sea left skin more hydrated. Dead Sea salt is incredibly rich in minerals such as magnesium and these minerals can aidthe skins barrier function, helping our skin to lock in more moisture. Dead Sea Mud and Salt gets a thumbs up from the Geeks!

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice

More commonly known as Aloe Vera, the gel from these leaves are renowned for their healing and soothing properties. It is thought that the small chain molecules called polysaccharides in the gel give it its medicinal qualities. Along with its anti-inflammatory properties, this ingredient will be sure to sooth irritated, sensitive skin and reduce the size of blemishes.

Kaolin Clay

We love to see clay in a purifying face mask as they absorb oils from the skin on our face. This leads to a reduction in breakouts too. Many clays can absorb too much oil and have a drying effect on the skin, but Kaolin is a gentler clay, meaning it won’t make your skin feel the tightness you feel with other clay masks.

Moisturising Ingredients

After cleansing, our skin needs hydrating. And that’s exactly what we get with Pixi Glow Mud Mask. Boasting both glycerin and squalane, this mask will be able to leave our skin feeling soft and hydrated. Squalane is very similar (in both name and structure) to squalene, which makes up 13% of the sebum our skin produces. It behaves as an emollient to make the skin feel and look smoother, while putting up a barrier against water loss. Working alongside squalane is glycerin, which is a humectant (and a favourite among the Geeks) meaning it can attract water from lower layers up to the outermost layer of the skin to hydrate it and leave skin looking plumper and healthier.

The Verdict

Often beauty brands try too hard to be unique and design ‘revolutionary’ synthetic ingredients that may not have much scientific research behind them. Pixi have took this mask back-to-basics with natural ingredients such as Dead Sea mud and salt, Aloe Vera and Kaolin Clay which are famous for their therapeutic qualities and put them all together in one mask. For its ability to perk up oily blemished skin, the Pixi Mud Glow Mask gets a thumbs up from us!
