For some of us toners can just feel like another unnecessary step in an already jam-packed skincare routine. Not anymore! Pixi Glow Tonic is spicing up our cleansing routine with a no-frills toner, filled with science-savvy ingredients.

The Claims

Praised by the likes of Caroline Hirons, Glow Tonic is hailed as a ‘glow-giver’ and claims to tone and condition our skin following cleansing. Enriched with Glycolic Acid to exfoliate skin and reveal a healthier, brighter complexion and Aloe Vera to soothe and hydrate, whilst oxygenating Ginseng promotes cell health and skin vibrancy. It’s certainly piqued our attention after reading page after page of online rave reviews, so naturally we couldn’t wait to put it under our beauty microscope and see if it could stand up to our scrutiny. (Spoiler alert: yes it can!)

The Science Behind The Bottle

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid (known in the beauty world as alpha hydroxy acid or AHA’s for short) is a wonder ingredient, found in so many of the anti-ageing products on the high street. Glycolic acid can weaken the connections that holds skin cells together, allowing the top layers of dead skin cells to be removed, transforming our complexions from dull to dazzling within minutes.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (Aloe Vera to us) is widely known for its healing properties, but what is it that makes it such a soothing moisturizing plant? It is thought that the mucilaginous gel of the aloe is made up of polysaccharides (smaller subunits of carbohydrates) and holds the secret for its medicinal properties. Studies have shown that Aloe Vera can act as a humectant, increasing water retention in the stratum corneum of the skin, leading to an improvement in the skins moisture. Inflammation is another factor that can damage our cells, leaving our skin looking older than its years, so we were pleased to see research showing that Aloe Vera can act as an anti-inflammatory too!

Panax Ginseng Root Extract

There are several species of Ginseng including Panax, which is the active ingredient included in Pixi Glow Tonic. A report demonstrated that Panax Ginseng root extract can encourage the synthesis of type I collagen, an important structural protein associated with skin elasticity, allowing our skin to ‘bounce back’. Not only does Ginseng induce collagen production but it has also been shown to protect keratinocytes and fibroblasts (the cells that make up our skin) from extrinsic ageing and photodamage by controlling the signalling pathway that leads to UV-induced cell death. However, these results were obtained from a study using purified ginsenosides, so we can’t be certain that the Ginseng found in the formula would be in the same concentrations as used for this research, meaning it may not have such potent effects reducing skin ageing.

Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Seed Extract

Aesculus Hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Seed Extract contains flavenoids which are described as radical scavengers because they hunt down and mop up all the free radicals that cause cell damage. This antioxidant activity helps against visible signs of skin ageing and is already used in many anti-ageing products.

Moisturising Ingredients

Glycerin, a favourite moisturising ingredients among the Geeks (which you avid readers will know by now!) is a natural moisturising factor (NMF) as it is naturally present in the skin, so topical application will help to keep our skin hydrated and healthy! Alongside glycerin in the formula are fellow humectants urea and glucose, all of which are able to attract water up from lower layers of the skin, to plump the epidermis and leave our skin looking and feeling healthier!

The Verdict

With an impressive stream of 5 star reviews, it seems that pixi glow tonic users share our enthusiasm for this product formulation! Who doesn’t want to start fighting early stages of aging and firm skin with just a stroke of tonic?! At £18 it’s not breaking the bank but with such great claims and reviews we think we are in love.
