The Geeks have put many primers under our beauty microscope and are now on hand to get you prepped and primed for the festive season!

How do primers work?

Primers work by smoothing out the skin and create a good canvas to apply makeup to. A good primer should allow makeup to go on smoother and last longer, helping to reduce appearance of things like wrinkles and large pores. Lots of primers contain silicones and hydrating ingredients that help to smooth out these areas of the skin that would usually collect makeup, giving a smoother appearance. Silicones also make your skin more hydrophobic (water-hating) and as almost all makeup is water insoluble, this helps makeup to stay on the skin better, more evenly and for longer.

Variations in primer ingredients results in primers that vary in feel/texture and work slightly differently, often with additional benefits to helping makeup stay on longer. Many primers contain mattifying ingredients to reduce shine or colour correcting primers can have skin coloured pigment or green pigment to help build an even skintone base.

Below are a few of our favourites for this party season:

Mac Prep and Prime Natural Radiance

This primer has a gel-like texture and is our go-to primer for creating a lightweight base that gives a natural glow for a night out. Ingredients such as Glycerin, Caprylic Triglyceride, Sodium Hyaluronate and Squalane (to name a few!) hydrate the skin, helping to reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, whilst illuminating mica and titanium dioxide helps to give skin a lovely, subtle glow. It’s also got some great antioxidants for protection – we love a good multi-tasking product!

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer

Smashbox photo finish contains cyclopentasiloxane and dimethicone, which are silicones and will help to smooth out any uneven areas of the skin that would normally collect make up, thereby giving our skin a better finish. It also contains humectants and skin-barrier improving ingredients such as propylene glycol and sunflower seed extract to help keep our skin looking healthy and hydrated and thus, make-up looking great. This primer is our go to when we are doing heavier makeup that we want to last a night on the tiles.
