We’re sure it hasn’t escaped your attention that the anti-ageing market is an ever-growing one. You’d have thought more options would have made it easier to chose which products are right for us, but for most of us the sheer amount of options available can be pretty overwhelming. Could Zelens Vitamin A Treatment Drops put an end to our hunt for a ‘jack-of-all-trades’ anti-ageing formula?

The Claims

Zelens claims this is an ‘ideal treatment for those concerned with ageing, as it targets all give-away signs of cellular slow-down’. Marketed as an age-defying powerhouse, Zelens ‘Power A’ is jam-packed with retinol, to refine your skin’s texture and dramatically diminish depth of wrinkles.

The Science Behind the Bottle

Retinol

Retinol, retinoids, hydroxypinacolone retinoate and Retinyl Palmitate are the top four ingredients in this formula, meaning they occur in the highest of concentrations! Retinol (as you Beauty Geeks will know) is one of our all time favourite anti-ageing ingredients and it is used widely in the beauty world to treat ageing skin. With good reason too, there have been several independent studies showing that retinol can increase collagen synthesis as well as inhibiting collagen degradation. Collagen is the ‘scaffolding’ of our skin; so increased collagen helps our skin to look firmer and so younger. One of the things that comes with age (aside from having to pay taxes) is the reduction of collagen in our skin, so it seems that Zelens Vitamin A Treatment drops could be able to reverse some of that loss and leave us with a more youthful complexion. Working alongside retinol in this formula, are retinoids, which are derivatives of vitamin A (retinol) and have a similar function when applied topically to our skin.

As retinol is the first ingredient on the formula list, we can assume it’s in a relatively high concentration, so we would recommend only using these drops several times a week to begin with and gradually building up tolerance to avoid irritation!

Retinyl Palmitate

Retinyl Palmitate is the combination of retinol and palmitic acid, a saturated fatty acid. When topically applied, it is converted to retinoic acid allowing it to have the anti-ageing effects we mentioned above, on our skin. The addition of palmitic acid brings antioxidant power to the table, so can help protect our skin from damaging free radicals, as well as having anti-inflammatory properties too.

Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate

It has been referred to as part of the ‘next generation’ of retinoids; hydroxypinacolone retinoate is an ester of retinoic acid, so it is already in the preferred active form to have its anti-ageing benefits when applied to our skin, and doesn’t need to be converted. Hydroxypinacolone retinoate is said to be less irritating than topical retinoids, yet still as effective and some research has emerged to support this idea. Zelens have got the whole retinol thing covered; it’s a thumbs up from us.

Omega-3 and Omega-6

Omegas 3 and 6 are fatty acids, which are really important for the function of our cells as they help keep the outer layer of our skin (the strateum corneum) hydrated, which as a result can make the skin appear plumper and more youthful. These essential fatty acids can also reduce transepidermal water loss (the loss of water from our skin into the atmosphere), helping keep our skin hydrated and looking and feeling healthier.

Fruit and Vegetable Extracts

Last but not least are the fruit and vegetable extracts – including Pumpkin, Carrot, Broccoli, Sweet Potato, Tomato And Spinach. These extracts are high in antioxidants, which can protect the skin being damaged by free radicals when topically applied. These unruly free radicals can cause premature ageing by damaging components of the extracellular matrix in the skin, such as collagen, reducing its elasticity.

Our Verdict

It’s safe to say we were seriously impressed with Zelens Vitamin A Treatment Drops and to answer our question earlier, yes, this product really can live up to its claims! If you’re on the lookout for an anti-ageing treatment that REALLY works (and don’t mind the slightly steep £115 price tag!) than this is definitely for you!
